French Cinema Week 2024 at UMI

Makassar, 28 November 2024 – Alliance Francaise (AF) Makassar in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs of the Muslim University of Indonesia (KUI UMI) held a French film screening event as part of French Cinema Week. The film titled Little Girl Blue was screened exclusively at the 5th floor of the UMI Tower on Thursday, 28 November 2024.

The French film screening event was attended by UMI students, including UMI international students from various countries. The event was opened by UMI Vice Chancellor V Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Muh. Hattah Fattah, M.S. Prof. Hattah stated, “We strongly support this activity because in addition to enriching cultural insight, film is also an effective means to strengthen international cooperation. Hopefully, events like this can be held more often to improve cross-cultural understanding among the UMI academic community, especially regarding French culture.”.

The person in charge of the activity is the Head of the UMI International Affairs Office (KUI) Ir. Hj. Setyawati Yani S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng. in her report expressed her gratitude to AF Makassar for the opportunity given to KUI UMI to hold the event. “Through film screenings like this, we hope to encourage UMI students and staff to further improve their international insight,” she said. Furthermore, Dr. Setyawati Yani said that KUI UMI is open to facilitating cooperation to improve intercultural understanding with various countries, including through film screening activities.

The film, directed by Julie Lerat – Gersant, raises the theme of family, identity, and the emotional journey of a teenager in finding her identity. After the screening, an interactive discussion session was held with local film critics to explore the message contained in the film.

“This film is very touching. The story flows emotionally and makes us reflect on family relationships and the importance of understanding one’s identity,” said Lina, one of the audience who is an international student from Yemen and is currently studying in the Architecture Department of the Faculty of Engineering. This joint viewing activity is useful for the audience in understanding the culture of other countries and as a means to develop networks for students and staff who attend. KUI UMI will carry out similar activities in the future in an effort to support UMI’s vision of becoming a world-class university.
